Walter Cronkite on television - 1976

Cronkite before news was entertainment

Everything was black & white, and we were ‘white’….and that was part of the problem. On our new color television, as I entered high school, Walter Cronkite tried to explain why James Meredith was surrounded by gray German Shepherds snarling into the shaky camera images of trampled bodies under the feet of federal marshals when he tried to enter the University of Mississippi. This was serious shit and we were now old enough to understand that white was not the presence of all colors.
